Honoring a Friend
By Anthony Niedwiecki
February 2008
To honor the life of Ross and his work in the community, the North Andrews
Neighborhood Association held a memorial service on November 15.  Over 75
showed a slide presentation that included pictures from his entire life.  Mayor
Gierer, Comissioner Boisvenue, and Commissioner Walls attended and spoke
at the service.  Members of the Planning and Zoning Board also attended.
State Representative Jack Seiler spoke at the service and called Ross a “rock”
who kept the neighborhood grounded even when discussions and issues got
tough.

In honor of Ross’ work for our community, we are accepting donations to buy a
memorial tile for the Oakland Park Library wall.  The tile costs $500, and I have
pledge $100.  We will accept any and all donations, no matter how large or
small.  Please send checks to NANA, 169 N.W. 44th Street, Box # 6, Oakland
Park, FL 33309-0550.  You can make them out to either the Oakland Park
Library or North Andrews Neighborhood Association.  Be sure to make a note
that the money is for Ross’ tile fund.

In keeping Ross’s spirit alive, NANA is working hard to make our association
stronger and more active in the coming year.  We need your help!  Please
become a member and attend our meetings.  We have some important issues
that need addressed, such as the 17-floor hotel being proposed at Andrews
and Cypress Creek, the proposed community appearance standards, and the
growth of the Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport.

Please feel free to email your comments and suggestions to me at
niedwieckia@hotmail.com.  You may also contact me at (954)319-5249.  If you
want to be added to my email list to receive updates on issues affecting the city
and our neighborhood, please send a request to niedwieckia@hotmail.com.

years.

Ross was well known throughout Oakland Park
as a strong advocate on all issues involving the
city and the North Andrews neighborhood.  In
fact, Ross played an essential role in the
neighborhood’s transition into Oakland Park
after it was annexed by the city.  He was also
active in Oakland Park government, where he
served on the city’s Planning and Zoning Board.
